Summary & Background: Digital Philanthropy & The World

In July 09 OVF's Joy Tang along with Academia Sinicia's Ilya Eric Lee presented at Dharma Drum University (DDU). The theme of the discussion was Digital Philanthropy & The World.

What is Digital Philanthropy?

  • Social Enterprise Oriented - Balancing business/ICT4D with social & ecological considerations;
  • Ethically Grounded - Carefully consider the impacts in the field and promote open, ethical & transparent work values;
  • Net Savvy - Effective use of Web 2.0 tools;
  • Bridge the Digital Divide - Key leverage point in more fairly distributing the world's resources;
  • Sharing of Human Intellect - Promotion of Open Source and Open Content tools


DP Values Driven Culture/Paradigm Shift

  • Fosters Knowledge exchanges between cultures that is bidirectional and based on mutual respect;
  • Considers the shared value of all human experiences;
  • Respects the key role of culture in promoting EcoLiving lifestyle and mindset shifts;
  • Understands that Real Change rests with the youth.


OVF Mission & Focus Areas (in relation to DP): Building Truly Humane Technology Networks

  • Current measurements of development and success should be expanded to:
  • Balance the need for technology with the need to form an ethical and conscious global citizen;
  • Foster Sustainable Economic Growth so that growth is not an ends but a means to stimulate the highest, most fullest potential;
  • Offer Global Networking model that seamlessly integrates and connects the physical with the virtual;
  • Demonstrate the link between strong community identity and individual self-esteem.


Digital Philantrophy & eLearning (New Academic Year IT School)

  • Student teachers from local University become proficient in computing and practice with children at local schools
  • Students learn how to use computers & create blogs & Use Web 2.0 tools
  • Program revolves around teaching people how to find solutions from a business perspective
  • Once training is completed, student teachers go out all over Ghana to promote digital awareness


OVF DP Timeline 2009-2012 Strategy (our long term goals):

  • 2009 Craft curricula that includes hands on training in green design and development
  • 2010 Develop ICT for EcoLiving platform for using ICT to promote more sustainable development globally
  • 2011 Prototype global learning center model that includes live/work environments for ethical living in several test locations *around the world
  • 2012 Form Global EcoLiving Center Network with a social enterprise and ethical focus
