Holistic ICT development for community prosperity

"It takes a village to raise a child" – African proverb

oneVillage Initiative addresses end-to-end human services for community prosperity. The efforts of many working in harmony realize much greater short and long-term gains than the efforts of many working disparately. It takes each heart, in unity, to care for our children and their children. It will take the people of the world, working together, to restore the human heritage of community, love, and meaning.

Of relevance here is AMD's 50x15 Digital Inclusion Program which promotes a Multisector Approach that is very similar to what we are putting forward: Partner Program "focusing on six key areas of development as identified by the ITAFE Global Benchmarking Study."

  • Power – grid based, solar, or manual power generation
  • Connectivity - wired, wireless, or satellite service providers
  • Devices - servers, personal computers, laptops, thin clients, smart phones, and other tools people use to access the Internet
  • Financing - government programs, financial institutions and foundations that provide micro-loans and other means for helping local people afford Internet access tools and services
  • Content - locally relevant software applications and information available in multiple languages
  • Expertise - training, repair services, and general ecosystem support.

However the methodology for ODIVs - oneVillage Initiative - is a comprehensive and more people centered platform for sustainable economic development, built on six 'pillars', which are the foundation of the oneVillage Initiative Ecosystem:

  1. Education
  2. Governance
  3. Economy
  4. Ecology
  5. Wellness & Healthcare
  6. Culture & tradition.

The pillars, and the concentric rings around them, describe the ecology of community revitalization.

Members of the community who are personally committed to support each other, as well as a physical location where they can meet and work together) is the core of the Holistic Ecosystem – the beginning point in revitalization. The oneVillage Community (the Field Agents and others who support the oneVillage mission), and Connection Portal (an ICT platform with an Internet connection) are the 'next steps'.

The ICT platform makes it possible to track real market prices for their products, educate their children to use the Internet, ask family members abroad for marketing support, and gather necessary data to certify crops as organic.

This Holistic ICT approach promotes the optimal use of information and communication technology (ICT) to reduce poverty and encourage the achievement of sustainable human goals. These ICT-based initiatives can be the drivers of social transformation ensuring good governance, economic and social empowerment. New employment opportunities are created through increases efficiency and productivity. Added productivity then supports welfare services, primary healthcare, education and environmental conservation measures.
